Years ago five friends went
thru an experience while on a hunting trip that has scarred them all.
They were abducted by aliens and experimented on, experiments that cost
one of them their lives. Now years later three of them have managed
to capture an alien for payback. Unfortunately the alien has friends
who are in pursuit and they flee to the home of the fourth friend, Wyatt.
He of course wants nothing to do with them and tells them to take the
alien back to where they caught it and let the damn thing go.
Of course things go from bad to worse when Wyatt’s girlfriend becomes
possessed by the alien, which it turns out is the beginning of a really
bad night! The bodies pile up in gruesome ways, secrets are revealed,
and the rest of the aliens do eventually show up before the sun rises.
I’m not a huge fan of the
Blair Witch Project so when I sat down to watch this movie from director
Eduardo Sanchez who also directed Blair Witch I had very low expectations.
I was completely blown away by what I really consider to be one of the
best horror movies I’ve seen this year. The idea of former abductees
taking their revenge on an alien is a completely unique and interesting
story, which is handled magnificently by a wonderful script. A
script that is full of interesting dialog, which is delivered by a great
cast, and slowly builds the tension until they get to a really cool
ending. The special effects in this movie are a wonderful blend
of really well done practical effects and some decent CGI. Given that
this is a low budget independent film that went straight to DVD I was
blown away at how cool the alien looked (rubber suits can still work
damn it!). Add to that some gut ripping and flesh melting shots
and you have a wonderfully bloody mess that is a blast to watch if you
are a fan of special effects. Even the CGI is pretty nifty in
this movie, especially the way the spaceship at the end of the movie
moves. I love the fact that it sort of hops thru the sky.
Good stuff all around.
Before I give the movie a rating
I feel a rant coming on that is totally inspired by watching this superior
film. This is a great movie that was banished to a direct to DVD
release. Not only that but it was directed by a man who less than
ten years ago managed to be involved in one of the most successful low
budget movies ever to get released in theaters (at least in recent history).
I just kept thinking to myself that if he can’t get a great movie
like this into the theaters, especially with his history, then who can?
And that really sucks. Anyway back to the movie.
I highly recommend this movie.
It is a great example of what talented people can do regardless of budget
and resources. Go out and find this movie and buy it right now!
