After watching a terrible low budget “movie” a guy decides to grab a video camera, a few friends, and shoot his own moneymaker to sell to the nerds at conventions for $30 a pop. Along the way he runs into technical difficulties, inept cameramen, money issues, a difficult actress, and a jealousy girlfriend. In the end he overcomes the obstacles but loses the movie in yet another screw up.
This movie effectively pokes fun at the whole low budget filmmaking community and is funny as hell doing it. The story is filled with lots of in-jokes and situations that only someone from within the independent scene would be familiar with. So instead of coming off as obnoxious and looking down on the low budget community the filmmakers are clearly poking fun at themselves as well. In addition to being a satire of independent horror movies Assmonster delivers what fans of the low budget movies expect. The movie is filled with naked women and crude humor, which personally I had a blast with. Acting wise I was pretty impressed with the three leads of the movie. They are asked to deliver quite a bit of dialogue driven humor and do so nicely. Plus they all seem to be genuinely funny guys, which I’m sure helped their performances. Now beyond them much of the supporting cast is rough. But considering what this movie is that sort of worked for the movie. If I have one complaint it is that the movie overstays it’s welcome a bit. The premise is funny and the actors enjoyable but the jokes start to get old over the 96-minute runtime.
Technically this is a very well put movie. The scenes are light well and the camera work is acceptable. What really impressed me was how nicely the sound was managed. Much of the humor of the movie is in the dialogue and they captured it perfectly. So in spite of the movie being about ineptly made low budget films the filmmakers really knew how to put it together.
Again the movie is a bit long for my tastes and could have been shortened up. Other than that it is a pretty decent parody of how independent movies are made. If you get a chance to check out Assmonster then I recommend you do so.
