Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957)

The movie opens with scrolling text explaining that you have joined a group of scientists that are investigating a Pacific island where a group of nuclear scientists have gone missing.  You are there to finish their work and perhaps to find out what happened to them.  A few minutes of stock footage of a-bombs and floods are followed by a deep voice warning that god is about to put the smack down on the human race (I’m paraphrasing a bit here).  Before the entire group manages to land on the island one of the sailors traveling with them falls into the water.  By the time that they manage to pull him back on the raft he is missing his head.  Not long after beginning their investigation another of their number falls into a pit.  During their attempts at a rescue they come face to face with a giant crab monster!  These giant crab monsters have been mutated by the radiation of a nearby a-bomb test.  They are able to consume the brains of their victims, absorbing them into a collective consciousness.  Also because their atoms flow freely like electricity over a copper wire bullets pass thru them like x-rays.  But really is the science important here?  Of course not!  Will the crab monsters be stopped?  Will anyone get off of the island alive?  You will just have to watch the movie to find out.

God help me I love these cheesy god-awful movies.  The acting ranges from average to pretty good.  Watch out for a young pre Gilligan’s island Russell Johnson.  The story is just too damn silly to be believed.  The special effects aren’t really very special; with plaster monsters controlled by visible wires.  But somehow director Roger Corman is able to pull this together into a very watch able and enjoyable movie in spite of its obvious deficiencies.  Attack of the Crab Monsters doesn’t take itself seriously and neither should we.  If you are looking for a fun way to waste an hour check this movie out.
