For the best of the Horror/Cult/Exploitation film experience
Breathing Room (2007)
On first glance "Breathing Room" comes
across like the average rip-off of "Saw", but after watching it I
certainly don't think so. It's along the lines of a lot of modern
horror films that basically involve their viewer as someone attempting
to solve a puzzle. Sometimes films like this succeed on a great level
and then again a lot of them fall flat on their faces. They have to
have a combination of things to make them work which usually includes
competent actors, which they unfortunately don't seem to have.
"Breathing Room" might not have any mainstream actors or even well
known ones, but they manage to handle the material that makes this film
a worthy competitor.
"Breathing Room" is the story of thirteen strangers, thrown
together in a warehouse setting with deadly collars around their
necks. It seems that they've all found themselves in a sick and
twisted game in which only one of them will walk away. Each step of
the way there are clues and hints to the reasons why they are there and
what will happen. Of course this leads to disagreements and paranoia
in the group since nothing seems to be true on the surface. Will all
of them manage to stay alive long enough to figure out what's going on,
or will all of them die before the game is revealed?
About ten minutes into the film I realized what type of film was on
my hands. "Breathing Room" is the type of movie that lives and dies by
its story and pacing and I have to say that I was impressed with the
way this film handled itself. It does have moments during the middle
of the film that I could have done without but then again, it's nothing
that ruins the movie whatsoever. John Suits did a wonderful job with
the script of the film in my opinion as I thought the story was pretty
strong considering how these types of films can fall apart in seconds
and it didn't.
I do have to say that the "main" characters all were played by
solid actors but there are some here that are definitely weaker than
others. At times the acting can come off as awkward but in all
fairness they aren't on screen enough to make it repeatedly annoying.
Overall I have to say that "Breathing Room" might not be everyone's
cup of tea, but keep in mind I didn't think it would be mine either.
If you want to check out a film that might actually surprise you a bit
and will keep you interested pretty much throughout its running time to
give this one a try. You might be pleasantly surprised by it like I
