A young woman is leaving a
local bar after a night of drinking and of course her car breaks down
on the way home. When she tries to fix her car a werewolf
attacks her and kills her. The next day the police find her car
and begin to investigate her disappearance. At the same time the
local newspaper runs a story (with the sheriffs blessing) about the
legend of the werewolf and the disappearance of the local girl.
This brings out a crypto zoologist that believes that the beast may
be an undiscovered species. After killing a few more of the locals
the sheriff decides that they need to go hunting the creature before
it does anymore damage. We get an A-team montage of them making
silver bullets and preparing their other weapons. Finally they
go walking around the woods at night. A few of them get attacked
and then they kill the werewolf.
I have to admit that for a
low budget werewolf movie this really isn’t too bad. The cast
is good but not spectacular. Though they aren’t really given
much of a script to work with. The characters are broadly drawn
and predictable. I pretty much knew who was going to live and
die as well as who was going to turn out to be the werewolf. But
at the same time the script is tight and the director, Leigh Scott,
does a good job keeping the action moving. Know there are a couple
slow spots but they are fairly short. The werewolf itself is sort
of goofy looking and gets way too much screen time in my opinion.
Also I was surprised at the lack of any real gore beyond a couple of
gut munching scenes. That being said the effects while limited
are adequate. The bottom line here is that The Beast of Bray Road
is a silly low budget werewolf movie that, while not groundbreaking,
is entertaining.
Compared to some of the higher
budgeted movies that have managed to botch this up I will give The Beast
of Bray Road it’s props. All in all not a great movie but I
had fun watching it. If you don’t mind a little bit of cheese
in your werewolf movie then check this one out.
