The mob gets inside knowledge
about a future building project and decides to buy up property at cut
rates before the news becomes public so that they can sell it at a very
high profit. Pop Byrd, who runs a karate dojo out of it, owns
one of the buildings. The mob enlists the help of a local drug
dealer named Pinky and his crew to convince Pop Byrd to sell his building.
After an encounter at the dojo where Pop refuses to sell Pinky they
run into him again and this time accidentally kill him while roughing
him up. Pop’s daughter Sydney shows up to bury her father and
collect her inheritance. At the funeral she meets up with Black
Belt Jones who was a friend of her father and the two of them begin
to unravel what happened to her father. Needless to say Pinky,
his crew, and their mob allies won’t know what hit them when they
start messing with Black Belt and Sydney!
Black Belt Jones is a great
movie. The story is very basic and the script is littered with
some really awesomely goofy dialog. I could get picky about the acting
and jumps in logic that the story takes, but damn it man this is a karate
action movie called Black Belt Jones! When you sit down
and pop this one in the VCR (I have a really sweet VHS copy) you aren’t
expecting drama you want some ass kicking and with this movie you won’t
be disappointed. The action sequences are obviously staged (three
car loads of villains wait to attack Black Belt one at a time) but at
the same time are very creative. The final big fight scene is
staged at a car wash in about 4 foot of foam! It is also pretty
clear that Jim Kelly is very athletic and an excellent martial artist.
Bottom line is that if you
are looking for a character study that explores relationships and the
emotion bond between man and women don’t watch Black Belt Jones.
If on the other hand you dig movies where a karate chick tells someone
that they can’t hook up because her “cookie” would kill him then
find this movie ASAP! For a very entertaining and cheesy evening
of fun I have to recommend Black Belt Jones.
