The movie opens with a group
of young people chasing a disfigured boy named Jack thru the woods taunting
him. When he fights back and manages to scratch the face of one
of the boys they drown him in a shallow pool of water. Ten years
pass and one of the group, a young woman named Sue, returns to town
in time to watch her friends disappear one at a time. Eventually
she comes face to face with the killer known as the Bagman. Is
it Jack come back from the grave for his revenge or has one of her friends
gone mad from the guilt?
What we have here is a very
low budget slasher movie made by a group of inexperienced filmmakers
and it really shows. The story is kind of cool and follows the
traditional story arc of an outcast seeking revenge for something that
was done to him/her. It does drag a bit and have some really unnecessary
and distracting attempts at humor that have nothing to do with the story.
For example one of the male characters goes to a bar and picks up what
is obviously a guy in a dress. He takes he/she home with him and
discovers the fake boobs and only then realizes that it is a guy.
It has nothing to do with the story and in fact takes the audience away
out of the story, which is a bad idea. In addition the acting
is terrible and awkward. I don’t’ ask for much from a horror
film when it comes to acting but the dialog is delivered so flat and
the scenes where they are forced to show emotions are really over the
top. The music from the film is the sort of public domain music
that you only hear in low budget movies like this and really shitty
porn movies. Not good at all. Now there are a few things
that I did like about this movie. For example some of the gore
effects were very cool looking and well executed. As a horror
fan I know they aren’t really doing anything innovative and I understand
how they pulled the effects off, but still they are well done.
Also lead actress and Stephanie Beaton isn’t afraid to take her clothes
off and does so a couple of times which I found to be very nice (am
I being too creepy for you guys?). I also thought that the killer
looked pretty cool and having the frown or smile drawn on the sack was
pretty cool take on the “tater sack” look.
The Bagman isn’t a great
movie by any stretch of the imagination. Still I sort of enjoyed
it for the nudity, the killer’s look, gore, and overall silliness
of the movie. If you dig slasher movies I recommend that you at
least give this one a rent or buy it if it is cheap enough (this is
a definite $5 or less kind of movie).
