The Big Racket (1976)

Legendary Italian actor Fabio Testi (“Revolver”, “Contraband”, “Heroine Busters”) stars as Inspector Neco Palmieri in Enzo G. Castellari’s explosive Italian crime film about one man will to take out an untouchable protection racket.

This film offers everything an exploitation fan loves to see in their films such as rape, urinating on rape victims and then setting the rape victim on fire. All kidding aside the group of villains are so despicable that I couldn’t wait for them to get their comeuppance. The film is 106 minutes and there is not a nice moment in the entire film. While cheering on the Palmieri character I couldn’t help but notice all the lives he was screwing up. Every person that he brought in for cooperation got the nasty end of the stick whether it was the restaurant owner Luigi who lost his daughter to suicide after the misfits raped her or the expert marksman that helped the police during the shootout? This gentleman makes the paper after cooperating with police and then witnesses about four depraved acts being done to his wife.

Palmieri goes through hell himself after being tossed down a hill while in his vehicle, losing his partner via vicious machine gun slaying and of course getting fired after not playing by the rules. Soon after this he enlists and eclectic group of that consist of a seedy club owner, Luigi the restaurant owner, an expert shooter hell-bent on revenge, a former racket leader and a swindling pick pocket to take out this merciless gang that has many connections that make them a very dangerous outfit.

This film delivers the goods and is a great blend of traditional exploitation with killer music by Guido and Maurizio De Angeles and the non stop melody of violence and extortion. The film has a long set up but the characters become sleazier and sleazier. Scene after scene show similar situations but they’re meaningful scenes that let the viewer in on each member of the vigilante gangs motive later on in the story.

The writing of this story isn’t too shabby. Sure this entire story has elements seen in other crime sagas and early exploitation films but I got to admire the scene that features two sting operations. One by the police followed up by the criminals that already knew there was a sting operation was around them. From here criminals are popping out of boxcars and the body count starts on both sides.

All of the acting is superb and as always Fabio Testi is the believable hero. Tough as nails and his performances kept the audience following his lead! I can analyze each and every performance but I will just say that everyone turned in great performances on each side.

Let me run through the list. Prison breaks, golden showers, terror, vandalism, explosions, vigilante justice, corruption, arson, stunts, scumbags begging for their life, normal people going insane, gang rape, sleazy lawyers, drugs, bank hold ups and every day people getting extorted.

Witness Fabio Testi as Palmieri work his way from the bottom to the top while losing most the battles! The ending is action packed and without many survivors. This has to be one of the breeziest viewing experiences I had in some time. The story is easy to keep up with and filled with all the traits I like in my movies. Do yourself a favor and pick up this film that delivers the kills and thrills. Enzo G. Casteralli understood how to make exploitation films. Non stop action, despicable villains, chaotic destruction and a mindless but interesting story. No wonder he scored actors like Franco Nero and Fabio Testi! Must own film for anyone that likes action flicks from the 70's.
