A married couple and the wifeís
sister are on holiday when they decide to go on a fishing excursion.
With their guide they travel upstream in a small boat to an isolated
mangrove forest that is partly submerged. Their boat is suddenly
capsized and a very large crocodile takes their guide. The three
tourists make their way to a tree to stay out of reach from the still
lurking croc. Very quickly they realize that they are surrounded
by water with a very hungry predator lurking below. But how will
they escape? Can any of them even make it?
Well if you couldnít tell
from how brief the plot synopsis is the plot is basic and simple.
Which just goes to prove that if you are a talented filmmaker you can
make a good film from the simplest of materials. As I stated the
story is simple, but very effective. They take people and put
them in an environment where they are no longer dominant, but in fact
the prey. The movie quickly boils down to three people stuck in
a tree afraid of something that they canít see, but know is around.
The cast does a fantastic job of playing their characters with a great
deal of sympathy and realism. They also have chemistry on screen,
which made me feel like they really were family. I found myself
caring about the characters and what happened to them. This sets
up the tension that makes the rest of the film work. There are
parts of this movie that are absolutely nerve wracking. This is
one of the few movies Iíve seen recently that literally kept me on
the edge of my seat.
I canít believe the level
of gore that this movie delivers. The attacks are brutal and realistic
to the point of being disturbing. The filmmakers masterfully combined
the use of real crocodiles to give the movie a realistic feel that no
amount of special effects could manage. When they do use props
they look realistic and are very effective. If this movie uses
any CGI at all I canít see it (which means they did it right).
Also both the picture and sound are masterfully used to capture the
mangrove swamps where they shot the movie. This is very important
because you donít see the croc all that much, which means the menace
and terror, comes mostly from the unfamiliar setting.
Reviewing movies can be a real
pain the butt sometimes. You end up having to sit thru and watch
movies that most everyone in their right mind would turn off.
But getting a chance to discover a movie like Black Water is the payback.
This is an excellent movie that I highly recommend that everyone check
out. Trust me it is well worth your time and money.
