Closure (2007)

"Closure" aka Straightheads is what I would like to classify as a thriller aimed towards a grown audience but is far from what you see in American thrillers. What at first seems to run of the mill revenge flick gets quite brutal eventually and has more balls than most films shown on screen nowadays. While at times boring(or shall I say rather calm but so is the classic "I Spit on Your Grave") I can't deny my passion for a Rape Revenge film. Gillian Anderson ("X Files") takes charge after being raped during a brutal attack by a clan of hunters. This event happens at random after a couple driving home from a trendy party wreck into a deer and the assault doesn't seem premeditated in the least. Gillian Anderson plays a strong willed woman named Alice who was accompanied by the equally terrorized Adam (Danny Dyer "Severance"). Adam's character doesn't get raped (No "Deliverance" pig squealing) but almost loses an eye during the attack.

The hunter's didn't leave them for dead but didn't expect to see them again until Alice sees them strolling by on horses while she was waiting in traffic. From here she begins to find out their information such as their home addresses and the stake out is on. The film was quite interesting because she wore the pants in the vengeful relationship between Alice and Adam. She even goes as far as to pop a dog during her and Adam's stakeout so that the dog wouldn't create a disturbance once they attack their former assailants.

Gillian Anderson creates a emotionally frayed character with one thing on her mind….Revenge. Adam isn't as eager to face his enemies as her but she forces him to see her point of view. She wasn't to happy when mentioning that her attackers laughed after they were finished raping her. While this film isn't an accomplishment in excitement, it does offer just the right of amount of viciousness during the assault that made me want to see the inevitable payback. Both characters question their actions and humanize the situation instead of making this film strictly an eye for an eye display of carnage.

The acting by Gillian Anderson and Danny Dyer was great and they seemed like real people dealing with an unfortunate situation. Gillian Anderson played the lead over Danny Dyer and in a typical film you would most likely see the male take charge after an attack. It seems he wanted to move on although he got savagely beaten. Danny Dyer's character Adam walked the line of sanity as the story moved along. It seems while seeking revenge his character became emotionally ugly and sexually inadequate. The film was original but dull at times. Still it dealt with the situation realistically most the time and eventually manages to go into squeamish territory during a revenge sequence.

Director Dan Reed never went in a silly direction and dealt with all of the material seriously. I think that he is a solid up and coming writer/director. He is also known for a 2001 crime film called "Shooters" that he also wrote and directed. What he managed to throw in an 80 minute film was impressive. He wrote interesting characters dealing with an unsettling situation and believably had a woman play an anti-hero. It was refreshing to see a film not be an exercise in style. Instead it took the viewer on a ride with two broken characters that questioned their actions while acting out. I love simple revenge films from the 70's involving characters that I know before they even get started. You know the characters I am talking about. The tough guys the will take out an army of soldiers if you take out one of their loved ones. This film asked the viewer to empathize with the complicated decision of vigilante justice. The film really establishes that killing may turn these characters into the same scumbags that attacked them. Some of the scenes were too darkly lit for my taste but lighting isn't why I review films.

Again tune in for a great female character taking charge and a film that put just enough violence on screen. This film reminds me of "Vacancy" because it's a couple dealing with a bad situation. In "Vacancy" the couple was in danger but for how dangerous the characters around them were they were hardly scathed. This film showed the hell the characters went through and gave me legit reasons to empathize with the couple. I want to stress that this film is by no means a torture film or even an exploitation piece but there is a couple of startling scenes that could bother a person used to watching lighter material. It's an easy watch at 80 minutes and is carried by capable actors and solid direction.

To watch the emotionless face a Gillian Anderson change to guilt ridden during the finale was complex and amazingly honest. Also she is in a scene that shows her confronting her enemy after saving him from a suicide attempt without him knowing her to be the one he raped, at first and this leads a part cruel, part moral commentary.

This is a dark revenge piece with something to say about the human condition and I suggest all fans of this kind of material take notice. This wasn't what I would classify as kick ass. I would like to call it a film with the guts to show how ugly human beings can be and what a normal person is capable of once tested. Some of the stuff with the main villain was questionable but I enjoyed the movie as a whole, especially the role exchange later in the film! The tale ending is unbelievably poetic and I hope people get what I felt during the last second of the film.
