For the best of the Horror/Cult/Exploitation film experience
Dead in 3 Days (2006)
Over the years weíve seen literally tons
of slasher films, some are good and some are even more dreadful than
you expect going into them. See Iíve always been a fan of slasher
movies as they usually end up being a lot of fun even when they arenít
the best film. Or at least that seems to be the case with the majority
of the ones made in the 1980s. Lately weíve seen the genre revert back
to the slasher film to cash in, but there have been some solid foreign
slasher films that wonít reinvent the subgenre but are still solid
regardless. ďDead in 3 DaysĒ is an example of these as all the dialog
is German and the film itself was shot in Austria. It didnít sound
like a slasher film to me on first glance but after sitting down and
watching it thereís no doubt thatís exactly what the movie is and what
itís trying to be as well.
ďDead in 3 DaysĒ starts out on graduation day for a group of young
students. Their futures may look bright academically, but after they
all receive a text message that they are going to be dead in 3 days,
itís suddenly not looking so bright anymore. From this point forward
they are all being stalked one by one by a madman who will stop at
nothing until they are all dead. Who is doing all this and what does
it have to do with the students? Do they have a deep dark secret or is
this another case of madman going haywire and they all happen to be
standing in the way?
One of my biggest annoyances in horror films these days is the when
they try and incorporate cell phones into the movie. Not that I hate
cell phones per say but I havenít seen the most thrilling things with
them when they are used in a movie. But I have to say that itís kept
to a minimum here, but when itís used itís effective enough and not
annoying. Basically the movie doesnít live or die (pun intended) by
stupid phone calls or annoying sequences of people getting killed by
their phones ringing or anything stupid like that. Itís nothing more
here than a simple plot device that wasnít beaten to death and it made
the movie much stronger due to this.
The acting in the film isnít anything spectacular at all but itís a
slasher film and doesnít command Oscar winning performers to get the
material across. But the characters are all written pretty well as
they all have a major hand in whatís going on in the film and I would
say that not one of them was cast simply because they were easy to look
at either. None of them are wasted and the characters are actually
built well for effect when they start getting picked off.
The killerís look in the film is certainly cool or at least enough
to keep interest in the murderer and what heís doing. Itís nothing
that hasnít been done before though, but itís simple and effective.
Personally Iíd go the simple and effective route over something like
the film ďHatchetĒ did and go all out to create a cool killer and
failing on the delivery of the character.
The new DVD of ďDead in 3 DaysĒ from the folks at Dimension Extreme
comes with a decent picture and audio, but is greatly lacking special
features. Thereís no commentary, no making of, which will generally
have fans wanting a little bit more especially since the cast and crew
are virtually unknown to American audiences. A little more effort here
would have made this a great disc, even though the film is solid.
Overall I would recommend checking out ďDead in 3 DaysĒ especially
if youíre a fan of the slasher subgenre. Like I said, itís not going
to reinvent anything but itís a solidly entertaining flick that will at
least be a solid rental for most people. Purchasing this one probably
isnít the best way for most in my opinion but it wouldnít be the end of
the world if you did, especially for a reasonable price.
