Edmond (2005)

Edmond is directed by the great horror director Stuart Gordon whose other recent offering Dreams in the Witch House, of the Masters of Horror television series, was one of my favorites. Edmond isn't exactly the definition of the horror genre, but has enough similar characteristics to deserve a review from the site. The movie stars William H. Macy and a solid supporting cast of mostly cameo roles from the likes of Joe Mantegna, Denise Richards, Julia Styles, Mena Suvari, Ling Bai, and Bokeem Woodbine. The story basically follows one night in Edmond Burke's life after a fallout with his wife. Revealing too much of the plot would truly ruin the overall effect of the film so I'll stop there as far as the story goes.

As I mentioned at the end of the preceding paragraph, revealing too much of Edmond's story would ruin the effect of the film on someone who has yet to see it. This is because the film has so many twists and turns that the less the potential audience knows about it, the better. I had no real idea at all what the film was about and had just heard some good reviews. Watching it, I became enthralled on what was going to happen next and to what extreme. William H. Macy is an amazing character actor and, as would be expected, he completely carries the film as Edmond. As a huge acting fanattic, some of the more intense scenes made me want to stand up in my living room and clap. Macy's scene with Julia Styles is one to look out for especially.

The one night that depicts most of the film is further enhanced by its setting: the underworld of New York City. There aren't too many memorable movies that focus on this seemingly whole other world. The sleazy characters and grim backdrop that make up New York's seedy underground makes the film that much more interesting. Edmond is the average working man who finds himself thrust into this "never know what's coming next" atmosphere.

Overall, Edmond is truly highly recommended for a watch from this author. The acting, actors, and setting combine to form an intriguing tale. I can't say enough about Macy's performance. He is one of today's greats. This is one of those films that goes from point A to point B in a way that no one can predict. Comparing the first scene to the last one would be like comparing scenes from two totally different movies. And that is Edmond's greatest strength. It's unpredictability, which is unmatched from any other film I've seen in a long time. There are some definate awkward scenes and other small flaws but nothing that is very warranted. If you're in the mood for a different kind of thriller, Edmond may be just what you need.
