The movie opens up with two
separate story lines. First Godzilla has returned to the shores
of Japan and is destroying every power plant that he can reach.
The military throws every jet, tank and missile they have at him to
no avail. At the same time the government has discovered a mysterious
rock at the bottom of the ocean that appears to be emitting some power.
So they decide to bring it to the surface. What they don’t realize
is that the rock is actually a solar powered spacecraft that reactivates
once the sun hits it. The ship takes off towards Godzilla and
after scanning him zaps him with an energy weapon that finally defeats
the big guy, or so they think. The ship morphs into a monster
itself just in time to do battle with Godzilla again. Of course
Godzilla kicks it’s butt and leaves having saved the human race that
is always trying to destroy him yet again.
I love Godzilla movies and
I’m proud of it. Of all of the new Godzilla movies this is one
of the best. While not as tongue in cheek as Godzilla Final Wars,
it still is a good watch. Personally I think it is the only sequel
that has the same feeling to it as the original Gojira. The story
isn’t original, but then when you make a Godzilla movie there are
expectations. You have Godzilla show up, a new monster needs to
threaten either Godzilla or the human race, and then a big showdown
occurs. As long as you work within those constraints you are good
to go. I did like how the story introduces the flying saucer and
explains why it mutates into a creature. I also thought the subplot
with the Godzilla group trying to study him was nifty. The actors
do a fine job with their parts. Honestly though they aren’t
given a whole lot to do other than run around reacting to the danger
they are in. This is a Godzilla movie and he is what is important.
I consider myself a big connoisseur of Kaiju movies, which is what the subgenre of big rubber suited monsters
smashing models is called. Because of that I get really picky
when watching one of these movies. I notice the difference between
a cheaply built model city getting smashed up and a decently built one.
With that in mind I have to tell you this is one of the best movies
that I’ve seen from an effects standpoint. Sure it is still
a guy in a suit, but it still looks damn cool. This is also the
first movie in the series that used an entirely CGI Godzilla.
It is a very brief scene of him swimming underwater and actually looks
decent enough that I didn’t think about it until after the movie was
over.
So basically if you like Godzilla
movies then you are going to enjoy this film. If you don’t enjoy
Godzilla movies then you aren’t going to like this. Personally
I loved this movie and recommend it.
