In this movie from South Korea a young woman, named Min Ji-won, is suffering from amnesia and is feeling out of sorts at college as well as at home with her mother.  Things really begin to happen to her as she begins having dreams and seeing a mysterious ghostly figure.  One by one a group of friends that she had before her amnesia begin to drown on dry land.  With the help of her only friend, a young man who may know more than he is admitting to, she begins to unravel the mystery of her past.  It soon becomes a race against time to see whether she will succeed before the ghost gets to her.

For me this is an interesting review to write.  This Asian ghost thing has been done to death so while it isn’t fair to judge a movie based upon what I’ve already seen I really have to.  The story is interesting and engaging and never slow.  Flashbacks can really bog a movie down and be very confusing and this movie has a lot of flashbacks in it as Min slowly regains her memory.  While the flashbacks are a bit disjointed and confusing they do begin to make sense and reveal just enough to keep the audience in the same state of mind as the character they are watching.  Without revealing anything about the story I will say that everything makes sense at the end of the movie including the odd behavior of a couple of the secondary characters.  Lets just say not all is as it seems.  Speaking of characters this is one of those movies that doesn’t have a weak actor in the cast.  They all do a superior job in their parts with some of them doing an amazing job with facial expressions that are far more effective than any dialog could be.  Again not to spoil anything but there are some really evil you women in this movie.  As is the case with most of the ghost stories there really isn’t much in the way of special effects.  The appearances of the ghost are mostly handled thru the use of lighting, camera work, and music.  While none of these are groundbreaking or different from how other genre films have handled them they are quite effective.

So back to my point of the ghost thing being done to death (no pun intended).  The creators of this movie did try and add something to the movie sort of a twist all their own.  Without revealing what it is I can say that it was sort of neat and did go a long way to explaining some odd behavior.  There was one aspect to the twist that I don’t feel was really very well explained.  What the hell this is a ghost story so I suppose some things can remain a mystery.  Bottom line while the Ghost isn’t terribly original it does try a few new things and is a fun watch.
