Hero Wanted (2008)

First I gotta mention that Cuba Gooding Jr. is one of the only blockbuster actors that can make good straight to DVD flicks. It seems to me that his last few Hollywood productions aside from American Gangster were not as entertaining as his lower budget films. For example, a couple of years ago I came across the movie "Dirty" staring Cuba and Clifton Collins Jr. They played 2 ex-gangbangers turned Narco cops in and elite LA drug task force. I liked the movie so much I picked up a copy the following day. To this day it is one of my favorite Cuba flicks...

Hero wanted is a crime thriller filled with twists and turns that opens towards the end and works its way back to the beginning ,filling you in with flashbacks along the way. Cuba Gooding Jr. Plays local garbage man, Liam Case. After his wife and un-born child were killed in a bad car accident, Liam turned to the only thing that could take the pain away...ALCOHOL. Now he drinks everyday to just to get by.

One day while Liam and his friend Swain were having beer on their lunch break, they witnessed a terrible car accident. A young girl became trapped in the burning wreckage and wasn't able to free herself. Without hesitation, Liam followed his instinct and crawled in after the girl. He was able to pull her to safety but not before being burnt himself.

Liam Case was labeled a hero and was given an award for his bravery. This brought a bit of happiness back into his life and kept his motor running. Everywhere he went people recognized him as the "Hero that saved the little girl". Even the beautiful bank teller Kayla, (Christa Campbell) recognized him.

Just as Liam is building up enough courage to talk to Kayla, gunman storm into the bank and order everyone to the ground. During the robbery, Kayla was shot in the head and just as Liam jumps into hero mode he is also shot and left for dead.

With Kayla in a coma and Liam slowly recovering, he plots his revenge on the robbers. When two of the robbers are found dead, the gang pays Liam a visit. Realizing that he won't talk and that he has nothing left to use, they kidnap the only girl left in his life...Marley(girl that he rescued). With detective Terry Subcott (Ray Liotta) quickly closing in, Liam must take matters into his own hands to get her back.

Once again, Hero Wanted is another notch in Cuba's B movie belt. The cast was well picked. I am a fan of just about everything Cuba and Ray Liotta do. Cuba is such a versatile actor succeeding in everything from drama to comedy to action. Norman Reedus and Tommy Flanagan are also great. The ending will make you do a double take.
