When it comes to Jess Franco, you pretty much know what to expect from his films….sex and sleaze. Not that there is anything wrong with it and Mr. Franco has not only managed to get a long career out of it, but I highly doubt he would have ever got married to Lina Romay if that wasn't the case either. This time around we have another one of Franco's films courtesy from the great Severin films called "The Inconfessable Orgies of Emmanuelle". Now, I have to tell you this straight from the door. If you are expecting the usual that would be delivered from an "Emmanuelle" movie then stop right now. This movie actually has nothing at all to do with other "Emmanuelle" films outside of the name and nudity in it. It's a totally different film altogether and Franco himself even mentions that he had nothing to do with the title. It was supposedly changed after it was released to get a bigger draw during it's initial run. Even the main character had her name changed in the "dubbing" process to be Emmanuelle.
The story is about Marie, a women who has finally found her soul mate. On her honeymoon her husband and her go away and one night find themselves in a club. After having too much to drink, Emmanuelle has a lesbian encounter with a woman on stage at the club, enraging her new husband. At this point out it's a softcore free for all with everyone engaging in whatever their hearts desire. There's really nothing else to add to it other than lots of skin, hot women, and well….not much else. There's no doubt that Franco was out to make nothing more than a pretty, good looking skin flick here. It was in a day and age where hardcore pornography wasn't as excepted as it is today, therefore films like this would be released as a more acceptable version of pornography.
Personally I found the movie to be bland, outside of lead actress Muriel Montosse (billed as Vicky Adams) who I thought did a great job as Emmanuelle in the film. Plus, she super easy on the eyes, which never hurts. Also Franco does a great job at making the movie look good and I'd be so bold to say that it's one of the best looking softcore flicks I have ever seen. He does try and make the film erotic as opposed to sleazy and I have to give him credit for that, although I wouldn't have minded to see a little more sleazy thrown in. The closest you get to sleazy in the film is a pretty bland rape scene that is played more for pleasure than tragedy in the first place.
I also have to mention though that Severin films has done a great job with the disc as the movie looks great and there's a 17 minute interview with Franco on the disc that is highly entertaining. Although I wouldn't recommend the movie outside of it's aptitude of porn it may be worth a look of you are looking for erotic cinema. It's a far cry from Franco's other work, and to be honest only Franco collectors would really want this movie.
