Knock Knock (2008)

Joe Ariola’s impressively gory, but strangely edited slasher film titled “Knock Knock” features likeable body count filler with its teenage cast and a sub par story. Still the ludicrous story has a similar backdrop to the always admirable slashers “Slaughter High”, “The Burning” and the original “Friday the 13th”.

A bandaged masked killer is wiping out nearly the entire football roster along with their fine ass girlfriends. In the opening scene it seemed that the killers gimmick was just Knock Knock and then kill but most of the other kills in the movie feature the killer popping up by surprise. Each kill is practical and pretty impressive although the camera does some jolting, skipping and seizure movements that pretty much censor Tate Steinsiek’s honorable make up work. The cast is typical but far more likeable than most recent slashers. Most of the cast was green in terms of skill but they had a certain chemistry. It was refreshing to see them at least “act” like teens instead of debutants or sorority whores. Not all the girls have dignity though. One leaves the movie by way of shower autopsy! She gets naked as all fuck!

The backstory involved an event that took place a few years ago that involved Troy and Rico. Troy was always a weirdo and kind of slow and Rico befriended him because he was a fellow outcast. It seems Rico’s classmates disliked him because of his father’s Undertaker profession. One day while Rico and Tommy where playing war with toys, a group of jocks came by to play a cruel prank that of course turned tragic.

Troy’s involvement with the kids’ deaths is teased, shown and then eventually removed. He gets interrogated by a know bullshit cop (but a horrible actress) and is even a victim of trespassing when an ex-cop and one of the surviving teens grandpa snoops around Troy’s home. There are moments in the film where Troy acts like Frank Zito from “Maniac”,only to have a tie dyed air guitar solo scenes later. I was sure Tommy was the guy and so did the female cop with wooden lines!

The bottom line is the film is completely watchable if you’re a fan of slashers. The visuals are annoying as they blemish the superb effects work. The origin of the killer is shown in flashback eventually but is very inspired by classic slashers. Some of the acting is atrocious but funny. I couldn’t help but laugh during the close up of the fathers that lost their child. The acting is melodramatic and hysterical and there’s some odd overlapping screaming that repeats the audio over and over. You will have fun at times and be miserable with some of the worst direction and editing you’ll see. The worst scene is the final scene that shows Troy being interrogated in a class room. The deaths and unintentional humor is what kept the film interesting. I slightly recommend a rental as there are for more problems in this movie than there should have been. Slashers can be so simple but with multiple plot twists, strange editing, bad closing credits music and a “Knock Knock” gimmick that strangely is disappears during the course of the move, its hard to be pleased.

The film is hardly original but there is fun to be had. The mixture of flaws, quality effects, good and bad acting, New York dialect and the fact that its a brainless slasher makes this film an odd duck. Better editing techniques, focus on the gore, nixing the killer's sidekick and one continuous mood would have helped this film. Its all over the place but fun to watch. There are films that are so bad they make you scratch your head. This is one of those. Sometimes you'll just be disappointed in the filmmakers. They had the resources and blew it in my opinion.
