Years after the first giant
prehistoric croc incident more people start to disappear from the lake.
Of course everyone believes that the stories from the first set of attacks
are just overblown urban legends. But after finding bits and pieces
of an environmentalist the new sheriff and a ranger go looking for the
cause of the killings. They are soon joined by a wealthy industrialist
want to be big game hunter and his assistant. Of course the sheriffs
teenage son is partying around the lake and in danger as well.
Throw in a few other characters as croc chow and you have yourself a
movie.
It seems to me that when the
filmmakers sat down to make this movie they decided to play the whole
thing for laughs. The crocodile is mostly CGI, with a few really
bad floating props that do nothing other than float towards their victims.
There are a few decent looking body parts, but even most of the attacks
are clearly CGI (when they aren’t off camera). And I just have
to make myself clear here. Mostly I hate CGI. But in a few
cases used to supplement good practical effects I have liked it.
This isn’t one of those movies.
The story follows the formula
setup in the first film. Croc starts eating people, the sheriff
starts to investigate with a good-looking female outsider, and a whacky
guy flies in to confuse things even more. The only difference
is that they are almost making a parody of the first film, with intentionally
bad dialogue, and silly situations. There are huge plot holes,
characters making incredibly stupid decisions, and a twist ending that
is exactly like the first one. But don’t worry about it being
a spoiler, because it is obvious. The performances are okay for
a cast of “B” actors with John Schneider (Dukes of Hazard!) starring
as the sheriff. But again the script is paper-thin and doesn’t
really give any of the cast much to do, other than run away from the
monster croc.
Now I know that some of you
out there are going to think that I’m insane when I say that I enjoyed
this movie. I agree that it isn’t really good. But when
I review a movie one of the things that I have to take into account
is if I had fun watching it. I don’t know if it is my love for
bad “B” movies, but I did have a blast with Lake Placid 2.
Unlike many other movies that I have to watch, this one is never boring.
This alone makes up for many of it’s flaws. Plus the DVD is
unrated so they put back in the death scenes with the naked girls, and
who can hate on boobs?
If you are looking for a way
to kill an hour and a half then I can recommend Lake Placid 2 as a rental.
I’m not sure if it is the sort of movie that I can say buy, unless
it is really cheap. Still there is fun to be had with this one
if you give it a chance.
