In 2003 one of the most refreshing horror movies came out in a limited release and shortly thereafter a DVD release. "May" directed by Lucky McKee is a film about loneliness and ones journey to find friendships. For those interested in Universal Monster this is a take on Frankenstein but May is no creation and she is not a monster. She is a human being that grew up with an awkward childhood. She had a lazy eye and wore an eye patch in grade school. She didnt have the easiest time making friends because of her flaw. In the film she meets a man named Adam (Played by the awesome Jeremy Sisto). They meet basically because she has a crush on his hands. I know it sounds silly but she believes he has the perfect hands. She becomes more confident and starts to build friendships with co workers like Polly played by a hilarious Anna Faris. It seems like her life is improving and everything is tremendous. She and Adam start dating. . One day at a park they discuss many things including his strange obsession with Dario Argento's "Trauma". They set up a date for another day because he is in a rush to see this weaker Argento film for some reason. On the next date insecurities caused her to ask Adam "You don't think I'm weird?"
He replies "I do think you're weird."
She seems disappointed and says "I knew that."
Adam then cheers her up when he tells her "I like weird. I like weird a lot"
Eventually
they go to Adam's House to watch one of his student films (a film that
shows to people making out and eaticng eachother!) to see if she is
into his type of "weird". Well too bad for her things fall apart. When
people get to know her more they start to figure out that she isnt all
there they distant their selves quickly. There is a scene where she
kisses Adam and bites his lip. He bleeds and he is creeped the fuck
out. Her type of "weird" is not his cup of tea. She starts rubbing his
blood all over her face and neck like a goofball! He basically rejects
her and more rejection comes as the film roles along. She can't seem to
keep friends so that leaves May with her only friend, a doll
named Susie given to her by her terrible mother . You see the pain and
torment she is going through and you feel every emotion she feels due
to Angela Bettis's incredible performance. Those looking for a typical
scream queen look elsewhere. This is a stand out performance that
deserved an Oscar Nomination in my opinion. Bettis is not just a scream
queen because she is a wonderful actress that can make you believe in a
character. I wanted May to find happiness and get better the entire
film. With better development she wouldn't of became an oukast to
society.Does she find happiness? Or does she go off the deep end? Watch
this classic horror film if youre sick of movies without characters. I
cant wait to see what else Lucky McKee has to offer. McKee is a
director to keep your horror loving eyes on. This film put him on the
map like "Halloween" put John Carpenter on the map. Lucky's use of
music, satire on relationships and his original story telling make him
completely orginal. I'll be first in line to buy The Woods(unfairly
being released straight to dvd) when it comes out on DVD
