I'll admit it, I wasn't overly excited
at the proposition of watching a movie about Magic Users (not the card
players!), Wizards or Warlocks or whatever you want to call them. The
whole idea of them fighting it out just didn't really do much for me.
So, it's quite a refreshing change that by the time I had got to the
end of the movie I found myself having quite enjoyed it Funny how things
work out isn't it, damned preconceptions.
The movie itself is built around the
premise that there is a secret society of Wizards whose purpose is to
serve good and to basically act as healers. Of course, there is always
one that wants to buck the system and use his/her powers for evil, and
this fella is called the Magus and his intent here is to take out the
remaining members of the Wizards secret council, aided by his scantily
clad bodyguard.
These events cause Felix, who is a healer
and in wizard retirement, to try and find the Magus and put a stop to
his wicked ways. Of course the elderly Felix is not alone in his quest,
no no, he is assisted by his young niece who tries to get the old boy
healthy and fighting fit for his battles ahead. So what you have in
effect is a kind of wizard buddy movie, along with a bit of martial
arts if that is at all possible! Oh, I didn't mention that the Magus
bodyguard is a dab hand at handing out ass kickings, which is all good
as Felix' niece just so happens to be pretty good at Jujitsu. Ah the
wonders of coincidence.
Granted, this all sounds a little daft,
and it is for the most part. A fact that isn't really helped by some
of the acting, which along with some ropey script, could deter some
from viewing this. But, it was bloody good fun at the end of the day.
The special effects were pretty decent with all the magic hocus pocus
going on, the Magus was suitably evil and way over the top, the movie
also contained some good old fashioned cloth shedding. Game on my son.
Whether or not you enjoy this will be
down entirely to whether or not you are in the mood for a good old cheesy
movie, or whether you want something a little more serious. Like I said,
I wasn't expecting much but found myself grinning away during the most
part and come the end thought it was a fun movie.
