A secret American base is monitoring
an experiment where they have blasted an astronaut into space on a satellite.
Something goes terribly wrong on re-entry and the capsule crashes.
When they finally track down where the capsule crashed they find the
body of the astronaut inside. They retrieve his body and head
back to base to send their report into the authorities. Two things
become apparent very quickly. First is that there is some sort
of interference which is rendering the radio and the vehicles non-functional.
Second is that the dead astronaut has a pulse! Add to that one
of them is attacked by and shoots a large creature lurking around the
compound and they decide to post a guard. While a wise action
it doesnít prevent the death of one of them, who as many of the characters
will repeat again and again, is missing half of his head. Right
about that time the dead astronaut with a pulse gets up and starts talking
to everyone. As it turns out the creature that has been lurking
about was a stowaway on the capsule and has brought the astronaut back
to life so that he can be an incubator for the next generation.
The reanimated astronaut convinces his colleagues to give the creature
a chance to explain it's actions. They agree to do this and the
alien calmly explains that he had to kill their friend and so that he
could absorb his intellect, which is how he can communicate with them.
But they shouldnít worry because their friend really isnít dead
and has actually gained immortality thru being absorbed. When
the next generation pops out of the astronautís chest the will all
have the chance at immortality! So they decide to throw bottles
of gas on the alien and shoot flare guns at him until he dies.
This is an incredibly cheesy
and silly movie. God help me I loved it! The story is very
creepy, especially the astronaut with a chest full of alien babies (almost
20 years before Alien!). This along with the appearance of the
astronaut (initially almost zombie like) creates a real sense of atmosphere.
Of course this is all thrown out of the window when we finally get to
see the alien who looks like a giant shrub! Still in some odd
way that seems to work perfectly for the movie. The cast isnít
anything special, with the exception of John Baer who does a wonderful
job as the doomed astronaut. The special effects are minimal at
best and like I mentioned above the creature looks very silly.
Night of the Blood Beast plays
like a poor mans Thing from Another World. That isnít necessarily
a bad thing. While not nearly as good as Thing it is still worth
checking out. This is especially true if you are a fan of the
old stuff like me.
