Pathfinder" is a lackluster effort from start to finish. The film never finds its footing and seems to struggle just to make it to the feeble climax. The film is directed by Marcus Nispel and stars Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings and Doom). The only other notable actor's in the film are Clancy Brown (Carnivale) who portrays one of the villainous Vikings named Gunnar and Moon Bloodgood who has the role of the love interest.
The story is set 600 years before Christopher Columbus is given credit for discovering America. The film begins with a Native American woman stumbling upon an eerie ship that has been deserted on the shore. After investigating the battered old boat, she finds a young boy who is the only living person in sight. Taking the boy back to her village, the village council reluctantly decides to accept him as a member of their tribe. He has a peaceful and somewhat uneventful childhood as the story moves forward to when the boy, who's tribal name is Ghost (Karl Urban), becomes a man. It doesn't take too long before the action begins. As Ghost is off on a hunt, his village is raided by Viking marauders. Pretty much everyone in Ghost's tribe is slaughtered. He returns to the village in a state of horror. Soon, though, his feelings of shock and despair evolve into anger and revenge. All he wants is to kill every single Norsemen he can get his hands on. His quest for revenge leads him to find and befriend a group from another tribe. Within this group he meets Starfire (Moon Bloodgood) and instantly falls in love. The remainder of the plot is basically just Ghost versus the Vikings.
As I stated in the opening sentence of this review, I believe this film was very mediocre. The movie's greatest flaw is within its story. It is very bland and paper thin. It has absolutely no substance and this causes the pace of the film to be almost non-existent. The time, setting, and idea of Indians versus Vikings is a story that had potential but is poorly executed in this effort. The dialogue throughout the film is atrocious and Clancy Brown gives the only solid performance even though he is wasted in his role as the Viking leader. Karl Urban kind of annoyed me and just couldn't't pull off carrying the entire film. A lot of scenes were downright cheesy especially when Ghost is underwater and the spirit of his Indian friend appears to give him advice. When Ghost makes a remark to his friend the friend retorts with a horrible joke. I was just thinking "What the hell?"
