In 1997 Scooter McCrae finished principal photography on his second film “Sixteen Tongues”. It took him about 7 years to get this film out to the masses. I read an interview in Ultra Violent #7 with Scooter McCrae as the subject. He seemed like an interesting guy so I was excited to hear that his movie was playing at a convention I was attending. Instead of watching his movie I went and got drunk at the bar in the hotel. The next day I decided I would by his DVD since I missed out. He signed it “God Hates You, Russ” and I was pleased because I am an atheist that also has a hatred for god. I took the movie home, opened it up and watched an inspiring independent video (not film for all you snobs!).
The movie had many images I’ve never seen in a horror movie before including pussy wall paper, some innovative ejaculation shots, golden showers and pay-per-no-view porn. The movie has some well written and cool characters, especially Adrian Torque, a renegade cop who had to have most of his skin replaced during a terrorist explosion. His skin was replaced by tongue meet of those who died in the explosion, hence the title “Sixteen Tongues”. Ginny Chin-Chin is a girl with a clitoris implanted in each one of her eyelids that make her orgasm with each blink. She’s out to kill the doctor who performed this cruel procedure on her. The third main character is Ginny Chin-Chin’s lover Alik Silens. She is a computer hacker searching for her brother’s killer.
The movie takes place in a hotel and I don’t believe there is one shot that takes place in the outside world. I guess that is admirable for a director to make a film in a hotel although the movie is a futuristic one. In this future people have to pay for necessities like water and ice. It’s funny that we all buy that stuff at the 7-11 but in all seriousness they have to slide a card through a device to take a shower. Hey if in the future we’re willing to pay I am sure someone will be happy to charge us.
This is a very sexual movie and if that’s not your cup of tea this is not your movie. Since it’s a fictional story with a point I don’t feel anyone should have a problem with sex presented in such an over the top way. In this world people are so desensitized to sex that it seems violence is the only way to connect.
The only problem I personally had with this movie was the sound during some dialogue in the beginning of the film. I miss certain things and I feel like going back a scene to hear it. It’s not that big of a deal since I was able to follow the story and see tits throughout. The gore for this budget was cool and good enough to satisfy me but it is by no means a gore picture. I liked the cheap effects and set design in this futuristic story. To me it gave the movie its own charm and the story kept me interested. The actors weren’t perfect but at least I got to sit down and enjoy a movie with fucked up characters. I like seeing shot on video movies but a lot of those are comedic horror films. Cool to see a guy shoot on video and make a serious but unusual movie with sexual images laced throughout the entire experience. “Sixteen Tongues” succeeds in many ways. I’ve never seen a movie so sexual on a cheap budget in a claustrophobic setting set in the near future. I think Scooter McCrae is a cool writer with a wild imagination. His commentary on the DVD is a lot of fun so sit back and drink some scotch because that’s how he wants you to view his flick.
