George Grieves goes into the hospital for a colonoscopy on his 40th
birthday. He wakes from the anesthesia to find himself the victim
of a terrible mistake. It seems that the hospital mistakenly gave
him the wrong surgery and to top it off has put him on a floor with
an abusive staff. Things begin to spiral out of control when an
infection causes the amputation of his leg and he sees another patient
murdered by a very large male nurse who then begins to intimidate him.
What makes matters worse is that George is unable to get his family
or friends to believe or help him. Will George ever make it out
of the hospital or is he doomed to be another victim?
Sublime is a perfect example
of a movie that tries really hard but just misses. The story is
interesting and different from most anything else that I’ve seen before.
The characters are well developed by the script, which is only helped
by an excellent cast. I was especially impressed by television
star Thomas Cavanagh who shows here that he has the talent to carry
a movie. This was very important since Cavanagh spends a great
deal of the movie in a hospital bed, which actually leads me to the
real downfall of this movie. A great portion of the movie takes
place in that single hospital room. With the exception of a series
of flashbacks and a couple of “escape” attempts all of the other
characters interact with each other in this single set. An interesting
story and good cast simply can’t overcome this limitation. The
movie very quickly gets boring and repetitive. Honestly how many
times can a movie use flashbacks to try and clue the audience in on
the twist ending? And yes there is a twist ending that I saw coming
way before it was revealed, especially as the story becomes more and
more surreal. I also really have to question the decision to allow
this movie to be nearly 2 ours long (113 minutes!). This is a
film that could of really benefited by having 30 or 35 minutes trimmed.
The movie still would have been effective without most of the flashbacks
and in fact would have been far more enjoyable.
Most of the time when I give
a movie 1 star it is because the film is just a mess that shouldn’t
of been finished or released. While Sublime is a 1 star movie
it could of easily been a much better film. If I have ever seen
a movie that could of used a better director or editor to cut scenes
and tighten up a movie this is it. Still I can only review what
I’ve got and that is a movie that is too long and boring. I
recommend that you skip Sublime.
