When a college student named
David goes to work for Dr. Carl Stoner he gets more than he bargained
for. You see Dr. Stoner is a herpetologist who sells the venom
of his snakes to help pay for his research as well as putting on a snake
handling show with his daughter. Research that includes using
snakes as a blueprint for the next step in human evolution. Unfortunately
for David the good doctor isnít about to let nature takes itís time
and helps the process on itís way with a special chemical formula
that he has created. To further complicate things David and the
good doctors daughter have become very friendly.
I was very excited to check
this movie out and had heard that it was a really good cheesy drive-in
flick from the 70s. The story is just plain silly and filled with
plot holes large enough to drive a truck thru. Normally this is
not only acceptable in a movie like this but also sort of expected.
I mean it is a movie about turning people into snakes so suspension
of disbelief is pretty important. But this movie breaks my cardinal
rule and gets really boring until the last 10 minutes. We get
to see the whole courtship of David and the doctorís daughter Kristina
for crying out loud! It is also pretty clear that the snakes really
arenít co-operating with the filming of the movie. Most of the
time it appears that they would much rather hide under a rock then be
bothered by the actors. This is especially annoying when they
are supposed to be threatening, which they never really are. Added
to the uncooperative snakes the really fake looking rubber ones and
you get a monster movie with no bite (pun intended!). Other than
the rubber snakes the rest of the special effects are pretty good for
the time and the change of David from man to snake works well.
The problem is that the change doesnít happen till the last 5 minutes
of the movie and by then the audience has been bored to death.
There isnít much to recommend this movie. Unless you are a devotee of the drive-in and feel the need to watch this movie I recommend that you pass.Rating - *1/2
