Hey gang the name is John “El Juan” Shatzer and I review horror movies, or at least I try to! I’ve been a huge fan of the horror genre ever since I was a kid. Most of my earliest memories are of sitting down in front of the television on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon and watching whatever films the local horror hosts were playing. Since I grew up here in Ohio that would be Hoolihan and Big Chuck (later Big Chuck and Lil’ Jon) on Friday nights and Superhost on Saturdays. This was back in the day before home video (yes I old enough remember the day when phones had rotary dials and no one had VCRs!) when movies were affordable and available for these shows. I remember watching the old universal films like Frankenstein and the Mummy, as well as tons of the B-movies from the 50s and 60s. Don’t get me wrong I love having these movies in my collection so I can watch them whenever I want. I just miss the days when my family, and then later my friends and I, would plan our weekend around staying up to catch the late show. I suppose these memories are why all of those black and white cheesy films of the 40s, 50s, and 60s are near and dear to me.
So upon what do I base my reviews? I have one very basic and simple rule by which I judge all films, not just horror. Don’t be boring! If a movie can catch my attention and engage me then I’m going to enjoy watching it. This explains why I really like some truly awful films. If the acting, directing, story, or special effects are so horrible that I’m able to laugh at it then I’ve been entertained. If I find a movie entertaining then I’ll recommend it. The flip side of this is the movies that many fans find entertaining and “cool” which bore the hell out of me. If I’m having a hard time staying awake then I’m going to hate your film regardless of how innovative your take on vampires may be (George Romero’s Martin)! If you disagree with one of my reviews or just think that I’m an idiot (which I am most of the time) that is cool with me. Like the old saying goes opinions are like, well you know what I mean. In the end we are all fans who enjoy a good and sometimes bad horror film.
