This cheerily monikered release is a
collection of three short films by writer/ director Christopher Alan
Broadstone. Each one is very different from the others, but all three
dig deep into the dark recess's of the human psyche. They will each
leave a mark stained into your mind, and in turn changes your perceptions
of what horror is, or what it could and should be. Dark, dirty, gritty
and violent, with a rich streak of black humor. Not that these movies
will make you laugh, you'll probably feel a little guilty if you do.
I did, but then i'm a sick bastard. In all seriousness there is humor
to be found herein, but it is a twisted humor. The real focus though
of all three movies though is death, suffering and pain.
The first movie is Scream For Me, which
was originally released in 2000, and is about a killer who gets more
than he bargained for after dispatching his latest victim.
The second, and my personal favourite,
My Skin! (2002) shows a vengeful Death, who is none too pleased when
a man murders his wife. How dare he do Death's work?
The final movie, Human No More (2004),
follows a jaded Detective who has come to the end of his proverbial
rope after a killer takes all that is dear to him.
Dark tales indeed, yet each one has
its own very unique character, even if the lead role in each movie is
played by the same actor in Tony Simmons. You probably wouldn't realize
it was the same actor if you didn't know beforehand, I know I wouldn't
have such is the versatility on display here. Each movie is shot with
a wonderful visual flare, with great camerawork and lighting, as well
as great use of sound. These are quite unique tales told and acted out
in an original and innovative style.
Accompanying the movies themselves on
this release is a quite excellent array of extras. There are 7 Behind
the Scenes featurettes, all of which are taken from the filming of Human
No More and are great viewing, aside from maybe the last one which seems
to have been added purely for comedic purposes; it is funny though.
11 Commentaries accompany the movies, there's an interview, photo galleries
and various odds and sods to keep you entertained. The movies combined
running times come to less than one hour, but you get more than 4 hours
of extras, so it's pretty good value if you ask me.
Individually these films are great viewing,
put together on one disc they are essential viewing, and as such this
release comes with a definite recommendation. This is dark and disturbing
horror that hurts.
