The first trailer is for The
Pink Angels. It looks like your typical biker movie from the 60s
and 70s. That is until you figure out that it is a gang of burly
biker types that also happen to be gay! Dan Haggerty (Grizzly
Adams) plays a gay biker; this is a movie I have to see. The other
trailer is for another biker flick called The Wild Riders. It
really doesn’t look all that interesting. The only recognizable
face is Alex Rocco, who seems to have done a tone of drive-in movies
in the 70s. Hell he showed up in Stanley (killer snake movie!).
Superchick (1973)
So our first feature is Superchick
from 1973. This movie is most known for it’s star, Joyce Jillson,
who is naked many times in the movie. As a child of the 80s I
am most familiar with Joyce Jillson as the astrologer for Nancy Regan.
You see after not really having a lot of success as an actress she started
working for the studios as an astrologer. She let them know the
right days to start shooting movies as well as when to release them.
The only reason that I mention this, other than to show that I’m an
enormous movie nerd is to say I hope she was a better astrologer then
she was an actress. The entire movie revolves around her, so she
has to carry it. But she just isn’t that good of an actress.
I will also admit that seeing John Carradine in this movie mad me very
sad. He did a lot of terrible movies towards the end of his career,
but this was just below him. The movie tries to be this funny
comedy about a liberated woman with a different man in every city (she
is a stewardess). I found the movie to be boring and pointless.
None of the jokes were funny and the situations were dumb as hell.
I have to mention one other
thing. I’m not a DVD nerd and I don’t obsess over aspect ratios
and re-mastering. So when I say that the audio on this DVD is
crap I mean it. For a good 20-30 minutes there is a hissing sound
that is so loud it threatens to make the dialogue inaudible. I’m
certain that this isn’t a manufacturing issue on the DVD, but an issue
with the source material. I’ve seen enough budget releases from
Brentwood and Millcreek to know what this sound is and was really disappointed
to find this issue on this disc.
Rating - 1/2*
Intermission time. Go
get your popcorn refilled and use the men’s room if you have to.
I’m going to stick around and watch the trailers, which are for a
pair of Sonny Chiba movies. The first is a movie called the Bodyguard.
Sonny Chiba does battle with drug dealers in an effort to stop the flow
of narcotics. I’ve not actually seen this movie, but it seems
that there is quite a bit of ass kicking goodness to be had here.
The other trailer is for Sister Street Fighter. I actually own
the Street Fighter set and have seen this movie. I dig it, but
then I’ve always been partial to women you can kick butt!
Hustler Squad (1976)
Be quite now the next movie
is starting. Hustler Squad is an inspirational little flick that
tells the story of a desperate mission to kill the leaders of the Japanese
army and navy during WWII. All of the targets are going to be
on an island together enjoying the company of some ladies. Since
there are too many troops to take the island US intelligence decides
to create a crack force of killer whores under the command of Major
Stony Stonewall. They will infiltrated the island and when the
Japs least expect it kill them and make their escape. It is sort
of like a Dirty Dozen rip off with boobs!
While this movie isn’t as
sleazy as it sounds I still really enjoyed it. You see some nudity,
a great training montage, and the ladies get to rip into the enemy with
machine guns. Hell a couple of heads even get chopped off (surprisingly
well done effect). I don’t know if it is because Superchick
was so bad or if this movie is so good, but I really enjoyed this one.
To me this is a perfect example of the sort of goofy movies that typified
the drive-in and Grindhouse market. Plus the movie was shot in
the Philippines and has Vic Diaz in it. It doesn’t get better
than that.
Again this one is a mixed bag.
I didn’t find Superchick funny or entertaining at all, but Hustler
Squad was a blast. I would have to say that checking out Hustler
Squad by itself might be your best bet.
