Another day, another zombie
flick, would this mean another sigh of exasperation from me? Let’s
face it, over the past few years there has been a virtual barrage of
movies featuring the undead, a few have been excellent, some have been
good, but more often than not there have been some real stinkers. So,
when I popped Zombie Town into the old DVD player I was hoping that
it wouldn’t be another disappointment. An hour and a half or so later
I must admit that I was relieved, if not totally blown away; Zombie
Town was actually quite good fun.
The movie starts with a group
of hunters joking about in their cabin. Their fun and games is short
lived though as one of their party returns, looking a little worse for
wear, who then proceeds to attack the group by taking a few bites out
of them.
After this bloody intro the
action moves over to La Fonds Garage where Jake and his brother are
trying to get the business back into shape after the death of their
father. They receive a phone-call advising them of an abandoned truck
up in the mountains and asking them if they can come and remove it.
Being in the financial situation that they are they can’t turn down
the business and soon head off into the hills. Of course this truck
belongs to the hunting party from the opening scene, so it isn’t going
to be as simple as just towing the truck.
They arrive at the truck, and
being the good guys that they are, decide to try and find the owners
to tell them it is being towed. However, once they arrive at the cabin
they find a scene of bloody carnage, and soon get attacked by one of
the party. After fighting him off and dispatching of the assailant it
becomes apparent that Jake’s brother has been bitten and has broken
his leg, so Jake reluctantly goes back into town for help.
Of course, when they return
there are no signs of Jake’s brother, maybe he has made his way back
home? Yeah right, nothing is ever that straight forward, because before
too long the town of Otis is over-run by flesh eating ghouls, leaving
Jake, his ex-girlfriend and their quite spectacularly hairy friend to
try and rid the town of its new problem.
Zombie Town was a surprisingly
good blend of action, blood and guts (of which there is plenty) and
some quite funny humor that moved along at a decent pace throughout.
The zombies in this movie are caused by slug-like parasites that get
under the skin and breed; the reason for this is left unexplained, which
was fine by me. Their taste for flesh though was just as ravenous as
any other zombie flick though, and there is quite a remarkable amount
of claret on screen throughout this movie.
On the whole it was a quite
well made movie, the script was funny and delivered well by an above
average cast, although saying that some of it was a little lazy; I was
unaware that you can tell a car is full of gas just by looking through
the window? I was under the impression that the gauge didn’t rise
until the engine was started? Maybe I’m wrong, and I am just nit-picking
but it seemed a little lazy to me. Aside from that and a few other little
niggles, such as the police station being the most run-down I have ever
seen, it was still a well made little Indie flick.
Also, be aware that everyone
in this movie is a crack shot with a gun; head shots are no problem!
It is most enjoyable though,
and in a day and age where zombie flicks clutter the shelves, it might
be easy to skip past this one as it blends in with all the others. Don’t
skip it though as it is worth checking out. It won’t blow you away,
but you’ll have a few laughs and there is plenty of gore served up
for the more bloodthirsty of you out there.
